The 4th Marquess of Milford Haven
The Marquess of Milford Haven is a title that dates back to 1917 when Prince Louis Battenberg took it, as well as altering his last name to Mountbatten. The title currently belongs to George Mountbatten, the 4th Marquess of Milford Haven, who has built a successful career as one of the UK’s leading businessmen.
Noble lineage of Marquess of Milford Haven
George Mountbatten is the oldest of the late David Mountbatten’s sons and a descendant of both famous playwright and poet Alexander Pushkin and Catherine the Great of Russia. His noble lineage means that he is technically 650th in line to the British throne.
He was born on June 6, 1961, and was known as the Earl of Medina until his father’s death in 1970. He has been married twice, first to Sarah Georgina, from whom he was divorced in 1996, and latterly to journalist Clare Husted. His son from his first marriage, Lord Henry David Mountbatten, will one day become the 5th Marquess of Milford Haven.
The Business career of 4th Marquess of Milford Haven
Although he is descended from an aristocratic family, the 4th Marquess of Milford Haven has not depended on old money or influence and has built a successful business career through a series of astute dealings, the most notable of which was uSwitch.com.
uSwitch.com is one of the UK’s best-known price comparison services. Though it started as an energy comparison site, over the years it has expanded to include insurance, communication and personal finance products.
The 4th Marquess of Milford Haven founded the company in 2000, following the deregulation of the UK’s electricity and gas markets. As UK energy prices rose dramatically in the early 21st century and UK consumers – both residential and business – increasingly sought out the best tariffs, uSwitch.com grew rapidly, and, with the help of a number of acquisitions, the company became one of the UK’s biggest price comparison sites.
Their innovative business model meant that, rather than charging consumers to use the service, they were able to charge energy providers to appear on the site. The model was so successful that in 2006, George Mountbatten, who at that time owned around half of the business, was able to sell it to US media giant EW Scripps Company for a sum of £210 million, a record for a UK internet sale. The company continued to grow following the sale. In August 2015, it was purchased for £160 million by Zoopla
Other business ventures
George Mountbatten has been involved in a number of other business ventures. In 2004, he set up Milford Aviation, a private helicopter service based in West Sussex, which continues to operate to this day. In same year, he also created Great Trippetts Polo Ltd, a polo livery yard based in Hampshire at Great Trippetts Farm in Hampshire, which is currently run by his wife, Lady Clare Milford Haven.
The sale of uSwitch in 2006 generated a great deal of publicity and, following the deal, the 4th Marquess of Milford Haven reduced his business operations and remained largely out of the limelight. That continued until the summer of 2017, when it was revealed that he had joined Andrew Salmon and Vipul Amin in getting involved in the founding of EnCazip. EnCazip is a version of uSwitch.com aimed at the Turkish market, as the Turkish energy market has now undergone de-regulation.
Thanks to the business expertise and commitment of the 4th Marquess of Milford Haven, EnCazip Turkey is set to have the same impact as uSwitch.com and could revolutionize the Turkish energy industry.
