Tennis Fashion: Who is the Most Elegant Player off the Court?
The golden age of tennis is coming to an end with some of the best players in history being well in their 30s. However, with the celebrity-obsessed culture that we live in, we can expect to see a lot more of these players even when they retire as it’ unlikely they’ll be able to escape the public eye. Tennis players are nowadays treated like rock stars, and every aspect of their life is subject to scrutiny. What we’ll look into today is who is the biggest tennis fashionista off the court, and we’ll use celebrity Snapchats (Serena Williams, we’re looking at you) as one of the most reliable sources when compiling our list.
#1: Serena Williams
Serena Williams is not just the most successful female tennis player ever, but she’s also a fashion insider galore. From backstage snaps from fashion shows (Michael Kors, 2006), to nailing the hot music video babe look (Beyoncé’s Sorry), the red carpet look from movie premiers (The Kingdom, 2007) to having her own clothing line, Serena Williams is well on her way to becoming a style icon regardless of the fact she’s not from an industry that is usually associated with celebrities. Her sister Venus also has a clothing line of her own, so it’s safe to say the Williams sisters are a fashion powerhouse.
#2: Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova is the first tennis player to introduce the ‘evening’ attire on a tennis court. The US open evening matches are played well after the sunset and there is Maria, playing in short glittery black dresses like a real superstar. Her style off the court is even more glamorous. Her tall and lean figure is often accentuated with heels, but she’s also one of the rare people outside of show business who own street style all the way. From airports to Porsche galas, fundraisers and fashion shows, Ms Sharapova is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to always looking sleek and stylish.
#3: Roger Federer
Say what you will about RF, but whatever clothes Nike decides to dress him in, he looks like a class act both on and off the court. You’ll see him strolling down with his four kids in tow always looking effortlessly dressed to impress. When it comes to polishing up for fancy events, dinners, fundraisers and title celebrations, he always looks sharp in tuxedos and no matter in whose honor the party is, RF is there dressed like the man of the hour. He might be the only male player worthy of Serena and Maria’s company, but his sense of style is impeccable and many will agree he outshines his wife Mirka in that department, and for that matter many other female contenders as well.
Honorable mention: Ana Ivanovic.
Although well in her retirement, pregnant, and focused on all things non-tennis, Ana Ivanovic deserves an honorable mention on this list for being the youngest ever athlete to sign a lifetime deal with Adidas. You don’t get a job for life from a clothing brand, sports or otherwise, without being a fashionista.
